“Numa obra clássica, o historiador Jean Delumeau demonstrou que entre os séculos XII e XVIII a Igreja identificava, nas mulheres, uma das formas do mal sobre a terra. Tanto a literatura sacra, quanto a profana, descreviam-na como um superlativo de podridão. Quer na filosofia, quer na moral ou na ética do período, era considerada um receptáculo de pecados. Os mistérios da fisiologia feminina, ligados aos ciclos da lua, ao mesmo tempo que seduzia os homens, repugnava-os. O fluxo menstrual, os odores, o líquido amniótico, as expulsões do parto e as secreções de sua parceira repeliam-os. O corpo feminino era considerado como fundamentalmente impuro. [...]

Mal magnífico, prazer funesto, venenosa e traiçoeira a mulher era acusada pelo outro sexo de ter introduzido sobre a terra o pecado, a infelicidade e a morte. Pandora grega ou Eva judaica ela cometera o pecado original ao abrir a caixa que continha todos os males ou ao comer do fruto proibido. O homem procurava uma responsável pelo sofrimento, o fracasso, o desaparecimento do paraíso terrestre e encontrou a mulher. Como não desconfiar de um ser cujo maior perigo consistia num sorriso?”

Both sacred and profane literatures describe them as the superlative of decay. Either in philosophy, or in moral or ethics of the time, they were considered a receptacle of sins. The mysteries of female physiology, linked to the cycles of the moon, at the same time it seduced men, it disgusted them.
